After enough time had passed since her husband died, Carolyn White gathered her thoughts about how she was able to handle the days that led up to and following Bob’s death. Her essay “Widowed—Now What?” starts with practical advice on planning for the inevitable. The latter part deals with mundane matters such as letters testamentary and the importance of self-care. That part can be re-read when the time comes, while the first section provides immediate suggestions for everyone, not just couples. For instance, –

  • Carry four baby aspirins or one regular aspirin in your wallet, to be chewed during a heart attack.
  • When you check into a hotel, print out the reservation or take a card from the front desk so you’ll know the address if you have to call 911.
  • Use a secure cloud storage for medication lists, medical durable power of attorney, insurance cards and other vital information.
  • Make a “necessary information” document with information such as who to notify in case of death, how to access your home, passwords and PINs to financial accounts.

Because many friends asked permission to forward copies to others, Carolyn is making “Widowed—Now What?” available to all Newcomers.  Just click here.
