We welcome all newcomers to the Grand Valley at our monthly coffee held the second Wednesday of each month. Members are encouraged to bring raffle items (please, no white elephants!)

ARMCHAIR TRAVELERS

Armchair Travelers is set to resume programs with a tentative date of Wednesday, September 15, at 7:30 PM. at Mesa State College in the Saunders Recreation Center (the same room we met in for last year's programs). I will confirm the date as soon as our Mesa State contact, Chad Thatcher, arrives back at the college and will announce it at our September 8 Newcomers' meeting. BOOK CLUB – GRAND JUNCTION

The GJ book club meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month from September through May at 10 AM. Our next meeting is September 14 at Wild Flour coffee house, next to Garfields in the Safeway shopping center, Redlands. Book selection is "Tinkers" by Paul Harding, winner of this year's Pulitzer prize for fiction. For more information call Barbara Murphy at 263-8057

BOWLING-FUN

BRIDGE – INTERMEDIATE (and now beginners)

Meets every Saturday at 9:00 AM until noon at the Senior Center downtown at 6th and Ouray. However, due to popular demand, a beginner’s session is also scheduled for 8:00 AM prior to the activity for players that have previous knowledge of the game. No signup necessary.

BRIDGE – MEN’S

FINANCIAL CLUB

Meets three or four times a year. Usually at 1:00 PM at the Dragon Treasure restaurant in Fruita where you can dine casually while receiving some great financial information by local experts. For additional information or to make program suggestions, contact Tom Lowrey at 256-9307.

HAPPY HOURS

Newcomers’ members meet monthly on the first Thursday of each month from 4:30 to 6:30 PM at the Double Tree Motel at 743 Horizon Drive. And now we are also meeting on the first Monday of each month from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Redlands Mesa golf course. A great way to meet new and existing friends.

HIKING CLUB

Meets every Thursday for hiking or snowshoeing. Snowshoeing is done for this season and hiking is back in full swing. John Moore announced that he is setting up an email system to notify hikers about the locations and times to meet for the Thursday Hiking group. If you would like to get on the hiking email notification list, contact John Moore 242-1936.

LADIES OUT-TO-LUNCH BUNCH

Meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month at various restaurants. The group will meet at the Gala Cafe at 11:30 AM on September 1. The Gala Cafe is located at 2650 North Avenue.. Reservations by Monday, August 30 to Dianne Alexander 243-5937 or Greta Hailey 523-7070. LUNCH AND TOUR

For all you flower lovers, on Wednesday, September. 15, (Meet at the Avalon Theatre at 9:45 AM) we’ll be doing a walking tour of three sites downtown to view dahlias. Paul Sparks, a dahlia grower, will accompany us to give information about dahlia culture and how he’s developed certain varieties. Following the walking tour, we’ll have lunch at the Dream Café at 314 Main Street at 11:00 AM. You’ll be able to order from the menu. Menus will be available at the August and September meetings for your perusal.

The tour is limited to 20 people.

MAH JONGG

The ladies Newcomers Mah Jongg group is meeting on Thursday mornings at 9:30 AM.  We would like to invite anyone who is interested in learning this fun and fascinating game to try to attend a session and find out what it's all about.  Please call Kathy Dorr at 314-2876 for location information or to sign up.
